My garage. Third Saturday in April. 82 degrees by 9 AM.
I was rigging up for the first bass trip of the season. Grabbed my favorite spinning rod. Opened the tackle cabinet. Pulled out a spool of 10-pound Trilene XL I'd bought the previous fall, still had three-quarters of it left.
Tied a Palomar knot. Went to cinch it down. The line snapped. Not at the knot. Three inches above it.
I stared at the broken end. Tried again. Snapped again. Same spot.
The entire spool was shot. Hundred and fifty yards of line. Never touched water. Dead in the package.
That's when I learned the thing nobody tells you about fishing line: it doesn't die on the water. It dies in your garage.
What Actually Kills Fishing Line
Most anglers think fishing line wears out from catching fish. Drag screaming. Rocks scraping. Teeth nicking the leader. That's part of it. But the stuff that kills line before it ever touches water is way less dramatic.
Three things destroy stored fishing line:
UV radiation. Sunlight breaks down the polymer chains in monofilament and fluorocarbon. Nylon, which is what mono is made of, is particularly vulnerable. A spool left on a windowsill or a boat deck for a single summer loses measurable breaking strength. Not a little. Twenty to forty percent.
Heat. Heat accelerates every chemical reaction, including the ones that degrade polymers. A garage in July can hit 130 degrees. Your line is cooking in there. Literally.
Humidity. Monofilament absorbs water. That's just how nylon works. When humidity swings from wet to dry and back again, the line expands and contracts at a microscopic level. Do that a hundred times over a winter and spring and the internal structure gets microfractures you can't see but your knot will definitely find.
Braid gets a partial pass here. Polyethylene fibers, which is what Spectra and Dyneema braids are made from, don't absorb water and resist UV better than nylon. But braid has its own storage problem: abrasion. If a braid spool rubs against something rough in your tackle box for six months, those outer layers are compromised.
The Dark Closet Rule
Here's the simplest storage rule in fishing, and the one most people ignore: keep your line in a cool, dark, dry place. That's it. No special equipment. No vacuum sealing. No refrigerator.
A closet inside your house. The basement, if it's dry. A drawer in the spare bedroom. Anywhere that doesn't see sunlight and doesn't swing 40 degrees in temperature between morning and afternoon.
The ideal range is 60 to 75 degrees with low humidity. Most indoor closets hit this without you doing anything.
I keep my active spools in a Plano utility box that lives on a shelf in my home office. The box cost twelve dollars. It has a rubber seal that keeps dust and humidity out. I threw in two silica gel packets from an old shoe box. Total investment: twelve dollars and two pieces of trash I would have thrown away anyway.
Quick Storage Checklist
- Out of sunlight. UV is enemy number one. No windowsills, no boat decks, no truck dashboards.
- Temperature stable. A closet beats a garage every time. If you must use the garage, put spools in an insulated cooler.
- Dry environment. Silica gel packets are free with half the things you buy. Stop throwing them away.
- Spool protection. Keep line spools from rubbing against each other. Friction damage is cumulative and invisible.
Spool Organization That Makes Sense
I used to keep my line spools loose in a drawer. Mono tangled with fluoro. 4-pound test rubbing against 20-pound. Half the labels had fallen off. I couldn't tell what anything was without pulling out ten feet of line and guessing the diameter by feel.
It was chaos. And chaos costs money.
Here's the system I landed on after three reorganizations:

Painter's tape is the secret weapon here. It peels off clean. You rewrite the date and pound test every time you open a spool. When you grab a spool in July, you know instantly whether it's fresh from March or leftover from two seasons ago.
I write three things on every spool: the pound test, the brand, and the month I bought it. That's it. Takes ten seconds. Saves me from the "is this 8-pound or 10-pound" game I used to play every spring.
Bulk Spools: The Special Case
Bulk spools save money. A 1,500-yard spool of mono costs about a third per yard of what you'd pay for filler spools. If you respool three or four reels a season, bulk is the move.
But bulk spools also take longer to use. That 1,500-yard spool might sit in your closet for two years before you finish it. The outer layers get UV exposure every time you open the container. The inner layers are protected, but they're not immune to heat and humidity cycling.
My approach: bulk spools stay in their original packaging inside a Ziploc freezer bag with a silica packet. I only open the bag when I'm actively filling reels. When I'm done, I squeeze the air out, seal it, and put it back in the dark.
For fluorocarbon bulk spools, I take one extra step: I wrap the spool in a microfiber cloth before bagging it. Fluoro is stiffer than mono and develops memory if it sits under tension. The cloth prevents the outer layers from pressing against the inside of the bag and creating flat spots.
Flat spots on fluoro are permanent. You can't stretch them out. You have to cut past them, and on a bulk spool, that might mean wasting thirty yards of line.
Mistakes I've Made So You Don't Have To
1. Leaving line on reels in a hot car. This is the one that hurts the most because it's the easiest to avoid. I left a spinning reel spooled with fresh 6-pound fluorocarbon in my trunk for three days during a July heat wave. When I finally fished it, the line had the texture of cooked spaghetti. Broke at maybe 3 pounds of pressure. The entire spool. Gone. Bring your rods inside. Even if you're exhausted. Even if you're "coming back out tomorrow."
2. Buying line I didn't need because it was on sale. End-of-season clearance on fishing line is tempting. Six-dollar spools of Seaguar. Three-dollar spools of Trilene. I bought six spools one December. Used two by the following August. The other four sat in my garage through a full summer and winter cycle. By the time I got to them, two were brittle and one had turned faintly yellow. I saved maybe twenty dollars at the register and threw away twice that in ruined line.
3. Storing spools stacked on top of each other. The bottom spool in a stack carries the weight of everything above it. Over months, that pressure compresses the line layers and creates flat spots. Mono and fluoro both suffer from this. Braid is more forgiving but still not immune. Store spools upright, side by side. Like vinyl records. Same principle.
4. Forgetting to check line before a trip. I drove two hours to a lake last August. Launched the kayak. Made three casts. Snapped off a crankbait on the fourth. The line had been on the reel since April and had sat in a rod holder next to a window the whole time. UV cooked it. If I'd done the fingernail test at home, I would have known in five seconds. When to Replace (Even If It Looks Fine)
Here's the uncomfortable truth: fishing line can look perfect and still be compromised at the molecular level. The degradation happens inside the polymer chains long before you see any visual sign.
My rule of thumb: if mono has been in storage for more than two seasons, replace it. Even if it was stored correctly. Even if it looks fine. A $12 filler spool versus losing a five-pound bass at the boat. Do the math.
Fluorocarbon gets more time. Three to four seasons in good storage conditions. It's chemically more stable than nylon. But if it's been in a hot garage, treat it like mono: two seasons max.
Braid can go five years or more if stored properly. The fiber itself doesn't degrade in the same way. What you're watching for with braid is abrasion on the outer layers and color fading that indicates UV exposure. If your hi-vis yellow braid has turned pale white, the outer layers have taken significant UV damage. Cut 20 yards off and inspect the layer underneath before you spool.

The Kayak Angle
Kayak anglers face a special storage problem. Your gear lives in a small, enclosed space. Rods are horizontal. Line is exposed to water spray, direct sun, and the oven-like interior of a kayak hatch in summer.
I solved this by keeping my spare spools in a small waterproof Pelican case that stays under my seat. The case is compact enough to fit in a kayak hatch but sealed well enough to survive a flip. Inside, I keep two filler spools and one leader spool. That's it. Everything else stays home.

FAQ
How long does fishing line last in storage?
Monofilament: 2 to 3 years unopened in good conditions. Fluorocarbon: 5 to 7 years. Braided line: 5 years minimum, often more. But the storage conditions matter more than the calendar.
A spool of mono that spent one summer in a hot garage is worse than a three-year-old spool that lived in a climate-controlled closet. Heat and UV are the real clocks.
Can I store fishing line in the garage?
Only if your garage is climate-controlled year-round. Most garages are not. Summer temperatures over 120 degrees, winter freezes, humidity swings, all of these destroy line faster than fishing ever will.
If you have no indoor option, put your spools in an insulated cooler with silica gel packets. It's not as good as a closet, but it's way better than loose on a shelf.
Does braided line need different storage than mono?
Braid is far more forgiving. It doesn't absorb water. Polyethylene fibers resist UV better than nylon. A spool of PowerPro or Sufix 832 left in a tackle box trunk will outlast a spool of Trilene XL in the same conditions by a wide margin.
But braid isn't invincible. Abrasion from rubbing against other gear is the main threat. Keep braid spools separated from hard objects. Color fading is your canary: if the dye is bleached out, UV has been working on those outer layers.

How can I tell if my fishing line has gone bad?
Three tests. The fingernail test: run a section of line between your thumbnail and index finger. Good line feels smooth and slick. Bad line feels rough, gritty, or inconsistent. The color test: mono turning yellow or chalky means UV damage. Fluoro going cloudy means humidity got to it. The pull test: tie a simple overhand knot and pull steadily. If it snaps at well under the rated strength, the line is done. Trust the pull test over how the line looks. Molecular damage is invisible.
Should I refrigerate my fishing line?
No. Refrigeration introduces condensation every time you take the spool out, and moisture trapped between line layers causes more problems than moderate room temperature. A cool, dry, dark closet at normal room temperature is exactly what you want. Silica gel packets in the storage container are the upgrade that actually helps.
