I broke off three good fish in one afternoon before I figured out my line was the problem. It was -8°F, and my 6lb mono had turned into something closer to dry spaghetti. The fourth fish hit, I set the hook, and the line snapped mid-spool. Not at the knot.
That's the day I learned that cold weather doesn't treat all line the same. Mono and fluorocarbon behave completely differently once the temperature drops, and if you spool the wrong one, you're going to lose fish.
What Cold Does to Mono
Monofilament is nylon, and nylon absorbs water. In the summer that's a non-issue. In the winter it's the whole problem.
At 20°F and below, three things happen. The water inside the line freezes into tiny crystals that create weak points. The nylon itself stiffens, so every coil off the spool wants to stay coiled. And ice builds on the line surface as it cycles through the water film at the hole.
The result is a line that's lost a meaningful chunk of its rated strength and fights you on every jig stroke. A 2mm bead of ice on your line is enough to kill the action of a tiny tungsten jig.
Mono still has a place in ice fishing, but it's the sacrificial role, not the performance role. More on that below.
What Cold Does to Fluoro
Fluorocarbon doesn't absorb water. That single difference is why it outperforms mono in the cold. No internal freezing, no water-absorption strength loss, and it stays supple enough to tie a clean knot at -20°F.
Fluoro isn't perfect in the cold, though. Cheap fluorocarbon gets stiff and brittle below 10°F because the plasticizers used to keep it flexible harden up. Quality brands , Seaguar, Sunline, P-Line , use cold-stable plasticizers that hold flexibility well below zero.
There's a catch with fluoro's stiffness too. It's denser and stiffer than mono out of the box, which makes it more prone to memory on a small ice reel spool. Strip the first 10-15 feet before your first drop of the day and it's a non-issue.

The short version: for performance in the cold, fluorocarbon wins almost every category. Mono wins on price, which matters more than you'd think when you're cutting off frozen line every hour in brutal conditions.
When to Use Which
Use fluorocarbon when: you're finesse fishing for panfish or walleye, the water is clear, or you need the line to stay supple for a natural jig action. Straight fluoro or a fluoro leader is the default for most of my ice season.
Use mono when: you're fishing outside in brutal cold and cutting off frozen sections constantly, or you want a cheap sacrificial line. I spool cheap 6lb mono as a main line with a 3-foot fluoro leader when it's below -20°F and I know I'll be shredding line. Losing $0.03 of mono beats ruining a $25 fluoro spool.

Does fluorocarbon freeze on the ice?
It can ice up on the surface like any line, but it doesn't absorb water, so it won't freeze internally or lose strength the way mono does. Quality fluoro stays supple well below zero.

Why does my mono line keep breaking in the cold?
Nylon absorbs water, which freezes into internal crystals that weaken the line, and the nylon stiffens below 20°F. Switch to a cold-stable fluorocarbon, or at minimum use a fluoro leader so the mono isn't doing the work at the business end.
